Worth Playhouse to light up new marquee!
The
new marquee at the Lake Worth Playhouse, 713 Lake Ave.,
is scheduled to be lit at 8:15 p.m. July 19 as part
of a "$100,000 Gala" fundraiser and a performance
of Hair.
The
marquee, under construction for more than a year, was
designed by Sharon Koskoff, president of the Art Deco
Society of the Palm Beaches, to fit with the 84-year-old
theater's Art Deco facade.
The
evening will begin with a reception at 7:30 p.m. The
lighting will precede the performance at 8:30 p.m.
Hair,
celebrating the 40th anniversary of its Broadway debut,
features many songs that "became an integral part
of American culture," including Age of Aquarius,
Let the Sun Shine In and Good Morning Sunshine.
The
production, directed by Carbonell Award nominee Robert
Dawson, will open July 18 and run through Aug. 9.
A
portion of the $100,000 needed to reconstruct the marque
was provided by a $25,000 grant from the Lake Worth
Community Redevelopment Agency. The remainder is the
responsibility of the playhouse.
Tickets
for the "$100,000 Gala" are $50 per person
and can be purchased by calling 586-6410 or online at

A Balanced pH in Your
Body Is A Critical Factor For a Healthy Internal Environment
and Immune System
If
you have a health problem, most likely you are acidic. Scientists
have discovered that the body fluids of healthy people are alkaline
(pH of 7.35), whereas the body fluids of sick people are acidic
(low pH). Unless your body's pH level is slightly alkaline,
your body cannot heal itself. No matter what method you try,
it won't be effective until your lymphatic pH level is normalized.
Most diseases can exist only in an acidic body, and most people
are acidic from poor diet and lifestyle choices.
Understanding of this factor is of utmost importance to anyone
who is fighting a disease, overcoming an illness, or
just wanting to be healthy.

First some good news ... According
to some energy experts, homeowners probably won't have to shoulder
another big increase in their fuel bills this winter. The bad
news? Fuel prices aren't expected to drop, either. We are faced
with two options: We can continue to pay sky-high energy bills,
or do something about it. Now, the really good news: Follow
the steps we've outlined here and you can easily reduce your
energy bills by up to 50 percent. click

Lake
Worth History
Local folklore has it that the first
post office in the Lake Worth area was founded in the
1880s by a married couple. The initial name for the
post office was Jewel. The post office was located in
a small dry good shop which the couple operated to serve
the lake traffic which connected the small pioneer homesteads
located along the banks of the Lake Worth lagoon.
After
Henry Flagler extended his rail line south from West
Palm Beach to Miami in 1896, a land development scheme
was created to plant a townsite between the railroad
and the lake. Purchasers of lots within the townsite
would also receive a larger plot of land west of town
for agricultural use. The initial name proposed for
the new town was Lucerne. However, the U.S. Post Office
refused to accept the name because there already was
a Lucerne, Florida post office. Therefore, the city
fathers settled on the name Lake Worth, for the lake
on which the fledgling town was sited. One of the main
streets was named Lucerne Avenue instead. The city was
officially incorporated in 1912. Many of the first residents
were farmers from other parts of the American south
and mid-west, looking to benefit from the growing winter
vegetable market of the time. The city benefited with
the rest of south Florida during the Florida land boom
of the 1920's. A wooden automobile traffic bridge over
Lake Worth was completed in 1919. The first casino and
municipal beach complex was completed shortly thereafter.
The 1920s also saw the completion of the Gulfstream
Hotel, which towers over the downtown to this day.
The city was severely damaged in the 1928 hurricane,
toppling the bell tower on the elementary school (today
the City Hall Annex) and destroying the beachfront casino
and automobile bridge over Lake Worth. This led to a
severe economic decline within the community which led
into the Great Depression. Things were so dire in the
city in the 1930s, that FDR's Works Progress Administration
built a striking, moorish-styled "City Gymnasium"
on the corner of Lake Avenue and Dixie Highway to provide
employment for the impoverished citizenry. The building
today serves as City Hall.
Development started again after World War II with many
modest pensioners, especially from Quebec, Finland and
eventually Germany, moving to the city and building
1,000 square foot cottages. These new immigrants brought
their industrious nature with them as well as their
native customs, restaurants, shops, and churches and
for decades the town flourished. To this day one can
find an unusual abundance of beer halls, chocolatiers,
Bavarian delicatessens and Lutheran churches, which
stand out in the semi-tropical urban sprawl of south
Florida.
After a short period of neglect and decline in the 1980s
and 1990s, the downtown area has seen a huge resurgence
in interest and development and once moribund property
values have soared. The city's charming main street,
Lake Avenue, contains some of the oldest commercial
structures in south Florida, including the Lake Worth
Play House and the art deco building, originally a cinema,
which formerly housed the PBICA. The re-discovery of
this unique charm has spurred new interest in the city.
The city was hit especially hard by Hurricanes Frances,
Jeanne and Wilma in 2004 and 2005. Their famous fishing
pier was the most damaged and with the help of FEMA
it is now being repaired; it is anticipated to reopen
in the Spring of 2008. |

City
officials are hoping to celebrate the reopening of the Beach
and Casino Pool with a
grand opening ceremony June 7. The pool, closed since December,
reopened Wednesday after completion of long-awaited and discussed
renovations. The renovations, completed in five weeks, include
tiled lane lines for short- and long-course lap swimming, starter
blocks, a new diving board, canopies, lounge chairs, and all
new brick paving around the pool. "The
pool looks like a resort," said Ben Smith, chief of
Lake Worth Ocean Rescue. |

The
Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
is moving forward to beautify the Gateways to
the City and provide the necessary infrastructure needed to encourage
redevelopment in the City. The very successful 6th Avenue South
Gateway Project was completed in 2007 and we are now embarking
on the beautification of 10th Avenue North. The concept to redesign
and reconstruct the roadway was vetted by neighborhood groups,
citizens and officials several years ago. The CRA Board is extending
an invitation for everyone to join us for a presentation on the
planned improvements. Please join us for an Open House at the
City Shuffleboard Courts (1121 Lucerne Avenue) on Thursday, June
5th, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. to view the design plans and provide input.
The redesigned 10th Avenue North will create a livable, pedestrian-friendly
street that will be a catalyst for future economic development
opportunities and overall neighborhood revitalization. For more
information please call (561) 493-2550. |

Beach County to hire
'coaches' for students
Under attack for the high school graduation rate, Palm Beach County
educators want to hire special counselors to keep troubled students
on a clear path toward a diploma. The School Board last month
created the job of graduation coach, copying a two-year-old program
used by all Georgia middle and high schools. The coach's role
is to provide plenty of personal attention, plans and strategies
for students who might otherwise quit school.

Fan arrested after harassing Cher downtown
An admirer of entertainment
legend Cher was arrested overnight at a Lower Broadway honky-honk.
NASHVILLE:
Cher had stopped by The
World Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge around 1 a.m. Wednesday
with a bodyguard when police said 36-year-old Calvin Hutton
Houghland got a little overzealous and kept harassing Cher.
Houghland
tried to talk to her and, at one point, even reached out to
grab her hip. According to a police affidavit, officers kicked
Houghland out of Tootsies and told him to leave the area. Officers
arrested him after he kept returning to the club.
Police
said he was intoxicated and that he admitted to drinking three
beers.
|

Houghland
failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested and charged with
public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Houghland is being
held in jail on $3,000 bond.
Turns out
Cher is in town because one of her best L.A. buddies is a huge
Merle Haggard fan, and Cher wanted to surprise her friend by
taking him to the Hag show.Cher’s
friend is jeweler-to-the-stars Richard Starks, creator of the
Chrome Hearts line, for you fashionistas.Cher
booked a private jet and told Richard and his wife she had a
surprise for them and they took off without Richard knowing
where he was going.
Cher
and Richard and their significant others spent significant time
with Merle before the show. Then the Cher posse sat six rows
back, center, for the actual Ryman show itself.

George
Carlin has died in California
at age 71
SANTA
MONICA, Calif. --
He was the counterculture comedian best known for pushing the
envelope with his jokes.
Carlin
had a history of heart trouble and a publicist said the comic
went into St. John's Health Center Sunday afternoon, complaining
of chest pain. He died just before 6 p.m. Pacific time.
Carlin's
routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never say on TV"
got him arrested in 1972 when he uttered all seven during a
show in Milwaukee. And when the routine was played on a New
York radio station, it resulted in a Supreme Court ruling upholding
the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting
offensive language.
Carlin
performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino
and Hotel in Las Vegas.
It
was announced in Washington last Tuesday that he was being awarded
the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

How to Make a Kite from Recycled Materials
Kite design ranges from small and simple to large
and complex. If you’d like to start with some basic designs
using recycled materials, you can easily make Mother’s
Recycled Kite from a paper grocery bag. You also can make a
recycled kite from newspaper.
Even if you
don’t use recycled materials, kites can be made of inexpensive
materials, such as The Penny Kite, which is made from a single
sheet of paper, or A Feather-light Bird Kite, made of a foam ball
and several feathers.
Make Your
Own Kite! gives instructions for making a basic, traditional kite.
You can even follow Ben Franklin’s instructions for constructing
his classic kite (used in experiments with lightning and electricity
— we recommend a clear day and safe distance from power
lines). If you need an easy kite project for a group of children,
check out 20 Kids * 20 Kites * 20 Minutes.
After you’ve
mastered the basics, consider different designs. The Guide to
Kite Making and Flying gives directions for constructing 19 types
of kites, plus it explains the various physical forces that act
on kites to make them fly.
Hard-core
kite enthusiasts might want to learn more about sport or stunt
kites. Two or more strings control these kites for tricks and
turns. Some people even use large parachutelike kites to pull
buggies — but don’t count on this to replace your
carpool!
